Minors HR Leader Mike Hessman Retires To Pursue Coaching

Minor league home run king Mike Hessman says he is retiring as a player and will pursue a career as a coach.

Hessman confirmed his decision in a text to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Hessman became the career home run leader for U.S.-based minor leagues in August when he hit a grand slam to pass Buzz Arlett with his 433rd homer.

Josh Donaldson Named AL MVP

Josh Donaldson has been named the American League MVP, becoming the first Toronto Blue Jays player to win the award in 30 years.

Donaldson got 23 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, who won the award last season, got the seven other first-place votes and finished second for the third time. Kansas City Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain was third.

A fifth-year third baseman, Donaldson led the American League in RBIs with 123 and was third in the AL with 41 home runs. His 8.8 WAR was the third-best in the majors.

Bryce Harper Unanimous Pick For NL MVP

Bryce Harper won the National League MVP on Thursday.

Harper, 23, is the youngest unanimous MVP in baseball history.

In earning all 30 first-place votes, Harper became just the seventh unanimous MVP in National League history.

Harper beat out fellow finalists Paul Goldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds for the award. He tallied 420 points to finish 186 points ahead of Goldschmidt, who finished second.

Dallas Keuchel Named AL's Best Pitcher

Dallas Keuchel won the American League Cy Young award on Wednesday after winning 20 games with the Houston Astros this season.

Keuchel got 22 first-place votes for 186 points from the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

David Price of the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers finished second, drawing eight first-place votes and 143 points. Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics finished third.

Keuchel led the league in wins, going 20-8 and helping Houston reach the playoffs for the first time since 2005.

Arrieta Edges Out Greinke, Kershaw For NL Cy Young Honors

Jake Arrieta won the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday after going 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA in 2015.

Arrieta went 14-1 with a 0.75 ERA over the final three months, the lowest second-half ERA in history for a starting pitcher (minimum 12 starts).

The right-hander got 17 first-place votes for 169 points from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Zack Greinke drew 10 first-place votes and had 147 points. Clayton Kershaw had the other three firsts and 101 points.

Maddon Wins Third Manager Of The Year Award

Joe Maddon won his third Manager of the Year Award on Tuesday after guiding the Chicago Cubs to a 97-65 record and a berth in the NLCS.

Maddon, who also won the award in the American League with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and 2011, got 18 first-place votes, for 124 points.

The St. Louis Cardinals' Mike Matheny came in second, with nine first-place votes and 87 points, followed by Terry Collins of the New York Mets, who was listed atop three ballots and had 49 points.

Correa Edges Lindor As AL Rookie Of The Year

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa won American League Rookie of the Year honors on Monday.

The 21-year-old received 17 first-place votes and 13 second-place votes, for a total of 124 points. Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor was second, with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for a total of 109 points. Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano was third with 20 points.

Correa began this year in Double-A. Then he hit .279 with 22 home runs (tops among AL rookies), 68 RBIs and 14 steals after his June 8 call-up.

Kris Bryant Named NL's Top Rookie

Kris Bryant was a unanimous pick for National League Rookie of the Year after he hit .275 with 26 home runs and 99 RBIs to go with a .369 on-base percentage for the Chicago Cubs.

The 23-year-old tied for the Major League home run lead among first-year players while leading all full-time NL rookies in OBP, slugging and OPS.

Bryant received all 30 first-place votes, for a total of 150 points, from the Baseball Writers' Association of America in balloting announced Monday.

The San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Duffy was second, with 70 points, and Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang third, with 28 points.
